Anne Morgenstern
In her first book, Purity, photographer Anne Morgenstern explores her “first home” – the former East Germany – which she left with her mother in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The minimalist design allows the bleak images to speak for themselves, while the color scheme of the photographs heightens the dramatic intensity.
In Purity, the photographer explores the mysterious notions of rural community – somewhere between traditions, customs, and modern life. Her search leads her to the Free State of Bavaria, where she illustrates how ideas of home and culture are asserted but also broken down and reformulated. With its Roman-inspired lapidary script and dark, rotating cover, the book itself almost resembles a stone tablet.
